Sylvain Pataille — A Free and Vibrant Expression of Marsannay
Based in Marsannay-la-Côte, at the northern end of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, Sylvain Pataille has become one of the most passionate and influential advocates of the terroirs of Marsannay and neighbouring Chenôve. He founded his domaine in 1999 with just one hectare of vines, expanding to nine hectares by 2002 and gradually building the estate to around 17 hectares today. In 2004, he acquired a cellar in Chenôve while retaining an old vaulted cellar in the centre of Marsannay, where part of the wines continue to mature in barrel. Through patience, precision and a deeply personal vision of viticulture, Pataille has established himself as one of the leading figures of this often underestimated part of Burgundy. For Sylvain Pataille, the personality of a wine begins with the vitality of the vineyard. The estate has been certified organic since 2008, while his farming philosophy is strongly influenced by biodynamic principles. Some parcels are worked by horse, harvesting is carried out entirely by hand, and intervention is kept to a minimum whenever possible. This demanding approach is designed to preserve the natural balance of the soils and allow individual sites to reveal their identity with clarity rather than being shaped into a predetermined house style. The domaine now covers approximately 17.5 hectares, with vines averaging around 40 years of age. The same philosophy continues in the cellar. Pataille favours long, gentle pressing and restrained vinification, often retaining a proportion of whole clusters. Sulphur use is extremely limited, while maturation is deliberately extended, sometimes lasting more than two years. More conventionally, many wines spend around 15 to 18 months in barrel, with new oak kept to a measured proportion. These long élevages are not intended to impose weight or polish, but rather to give the wines time to find their natural balance, develop complexity and preserve their energy. Marsannay naturally lies at the heart of the domaine, with distinctive lieux-dits such as Clos du Roy, Longeroies and Le Chapitre demonstrating the diversity and potential of the appellation. Yet Pataille has also become particularly renowned for his work with Aligoté, producing an unusually broad and ambitious range from individual sites including Clos du Roy, Longeroies and Les Charmes aux Prêtres. La Revue du vin de France highlights both his Marsannays and his Aligotés as exceptional expressions within the region. The resulting wines are sincere, energetic and deeply expressive, defined by freshness, precision and a strong sense of place. Rather than seeking uniformity, Sylvain Pataille allows each parcel, grape variety and vintage to retain its own personality. Through organic farming, minimal intervention and patient ageing, he offers a compelling and contemporary interpretation of northern Côte de Nuits Burgundy—one that has played a major role in revealing the depth, diversity and remarkable potential of Marsannay.
