Clos Thierrière — A New Reading of Vouvray’s Terroirs
Located in Vernou-sur-Brenne, on the slopes rising above the right bank of the Loire, Clos Thierrière was founded in 2021, when brothers Guillaume and Baptiste Frey took over a twelve-hectare estate. After studying at business school, both chose to return to Touraine, driven by their love of wine, their native region, and the enduring appeal of working the land. The vineyard stretches across both hillsides of the village, within a complex mosaic of red clay, flinty clay, and limestone soils. This geological diversity gives rise to distinct yet complementary expressions of the Vouvray terroir. In the vineyard, the Frey brothers place observation at the heart of their work, adjusting every decision to the rhythm of the vine, the weather conditions, and the vitality of the soil. Their approach combines the biological regeneration of the soils, agroforestry, and biodynamic practices, with the constant aim of restoring balance between the vine and its environment. The grapes are harvested carefully and at full maturity in order to preserve their natural integrity, freshness, and aromatic precision. In the cellar, winemaking is gentle and minimally interventionist. The brothers do not seek to correct the character of a vintage or to standardise the identity of individual parcels. Instead, each cuvée is conceived as an honest interpretation of a specific place, soil, and year. This commitment allows Chenin Blanc to reveal its full range, from mineral tension and delicate texture to generous fruit, subtle complexity, and remarkable ageing potential over time. Guided by a clear, artisanal, and sincere vision, Clos Thierrière produces wines that are vibrant, luminous, and deeply rooted in the identity of Vouvray. Through patience, precision, and respect for nature, the estate offers a contemporary and compelling reading of one of the Loire Valley’s most distinctive appellations.
